Myanmar Environment Portal (2014-2015)

Readily available environmental information and data is an essential prerequisite for government planners to make effective development decisions and realize sustainable development goals.

Within the GMS countries, such information and data even if produced, is often not easily accessible due to reasons including poor coordination between ministries and departments, inadequate information technology, and a lack of incentive or capacity to share information.

In Myanmar, the newly established Environmental Conservation Department (ECD) – within the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry – has been tasked to ensure more efficient and effective government environmental information and data exchange. It also has the mandate to raise public awareness on environmental issues.

CEP assisted ECD with these aims by supporting the development of an interactive website to host environmental state and trend data and statistics, as well as maps, reports and other resources.

This ‘portal’ will not only help planners and other environment stakeholders in Myanmar, but will also be of great value in feeding information into CEP’s own regional online knowledge services, especially the GMS statistics portal and the GMS maps portal.
